Haerter Farms in Hosmer, South Dakota consists of thousands of private acres of cropland and plush grasslands. The land is farmed for agricultural purposes, but the habitat is managed to attract wild pheasant, hungarian partridge and sharptail grouse. Pheasants are obviously the main attraction here in South Dakota, however, sharptail grouse, hungarian partridge, ducks, geese and whitetail deer call the state home.

Hunting season begins October 20 and runs through January 6. We are offering three to five day pheasant hunts for up to seven hunters at a time during that time period. You'll be staying in our modest farmhouse two miles outside of town. At the main house, you'll have access to the bar, pool table, big screen tv and hot tub. We'll get started in the mornings at the local diner for breakfast. From there we'll go hunting. A guide will assist you with his well trained hunting dog(s). We offer only WILD pheasant hunts, there are no preserve or hatchery raised birds on our properties. If we don't have our limit of birds by noon, we'll have a sack lunch and hunt until we're done. From there you will go back to town to lounge for the evening while your guide cleans, packages and freezes your birds for you. You are welcome to sit in the hot tub, watch movies, have some drinks... just have a good time. Dinner will again be at the local diner where you will enjoy the home town atmosphere. After dinner you are welcome to come back to the main house or retire for the evening.

  • Since we hunt only wild birds, we must follow all South Dakota Hunting regulations.
  • Nonresident adults need a SD nonresident small game license. The cost is $110 and is valid for two, five-day periods that the applicant must designate at the time of applying. Licenses can be purchased online with a credit card or from a license agent in towns across South Dakota. Click here to purchase your license online
  • Nonresident youths under 16 years of age need a copy of their hunter safety card or a copy of a current or or a previous hunting license issued to them from any state. The fee for the nonresident youth small game license is $25. The license is valid for two, five-day periods, the same as the adult license. It is for nonresidents ages 12 through 15. A parents or guardian must accompany the youth when obtaining the license. Click here to purchase your license online
  • Transportation requirements: Pheasants must have either the head, fully feathered wing or a foot attached while in transportation. All other game birds must have either the head or a fully feathered wing attached. To transport another hunter’s birds, one must get a free transportation permit from a S.D. Conservation Officer, which should be organized well in advance of the hunt. Go to GFP Offices for information on contacting a SD Conservation Officer.
  • Dog requirements: Dogs being brought into South Dakota are required to have a health certificate from their local veterinarian indicating that all shots are up-to-date and they are disease-free animals. Dog owners who have any questions concerning these requirements may call the Animal Industry Board at (605) 773-3321.
  • Blaze Orange is required.
  • Non Resident waterfowl permits are by special draw
  • Whitetail Deer Hunting is available by special arrangements. *mainly archery

A Note From Chuck At Haerter Farms:
The 2007 pheasant nesting season has been a tremendous success. Numerous large covies of various sized young birds are noted and we anticipate further progression for a highly successful hunting season.

We have spent most of the spring and summer on habitat - many of the trees planted last year, prior to the drought, did not survive and needed to be replaced. WHAT FUN!!! We also have been taking care of the various grasslands in our control. HEY - we also are presently remodeling the main house in town. Sheila is no longer living upstairs so this may make it more comfortable for some of you. If time permits, dog kennel facilities will be constructed before hunting season.

Thanks,
Charles Haerter

High Pheasant Numbers For 2007 Season:
South Dakota is experiencing historically high pheasant numbers. Brood count surveys by the South Dakota Game, Fish nad Parks Department estimated that statewide, this year's pheasant population was 23 percent higher than last year's and 18 percent greater than the 2005 pheasant population, which was at a 40-year high.

Nick Cochran, a conservation officer with the S. Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Dept. says: "We haven't seen numbers like this since 1963."
