High Country Outfitters offers a variety of top quality mule deer hunts. Trophy mule deer are the highlights of our guided hunts, they book early and are for the serious mule deer hunter. We take mature, heavy-horned bucks in the 26 to 30 inch range each year and non-typical bucks are fairly common. Deer tags are over-the-counter except for the early velvet hunt.

Depending on where and how you choose to hunt, your hunting experience could vary from a lodge hunt to a complete pack-in hunt up to fifteen miles from the trailhead. Horses and mules will be used for pack-in and traveling back and forth to the hunting area. Most hunting will be on foot and elevations can range anywhere from 3500' to 9500'. Our camps consist of canvas wall tents and cook tent, with showers, wood stoves and excellent home cooked meals for which we are famous. Our guides are experienced mule deer hunters and know the area well. Hunter success is 50% and opportunity to take any buck is at 95%, this is a consistent average year to year. Most clients we take are trophy hunters, which explains the 50% harvest.

* Just as a side note, your non-resident mule deer tag can be used to tag a bear, mountain lion OR a mule deer.

This is an early rifle hunt starting in August in unit 39 and is by controlled permit only guns. High Country Outfitters has one allocated tag. If you hunt in August, the bucks will be in velvet and in bachelor groups. If you don't want a velvet buck, wait until September and the bucks will be rubbed off and hard-horned. This hunt is very popular and usually books years in advance, so book fast. If you don't want to wait for one of our allocated tags, you can apply for a controlled permit. If you draw a tag, we would be happy to take you. If you fill out this worksheet, it will help us get your license and tag.
